1950 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 Club Coupe 287 Display Hood

1 hit ID #8283

The 287ci General Motors Research High Compression Test engine was developed as the platform for the first mass-production OHV V8, and debuted with 303ci displacement as the “Kettering V8” for Oldsmobile in 1949. Approximately three dozen of these 287ci OHV engines were reportedly produced to be supplied to petroleum companies for fuel studies. The powerplants were shipped with 8:1, 10:1, and 12:1 cylinder heads

The engine carries serial number HC128 and is also fitted with an experimental finned ignition coil. Alterations include two Carter carburetors sitting atop an Edmunds intake, a modified bat-wing air cleaner, and Belond exhaust headers feeding into 40″ Cherry Bomb glasspack mufflers. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 1937 Cadillac LaSalle 3-speed manual transmission and Borg-Warner overdrive.
