Its most significant feature, however, was the 428 CI Super Cobra Jet Ram Air V-8 nestled beneath the NACA-ducted fiberglass hood. As the factory door tag shows, the car was ordered with the V-code 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle option, which automatically upgraded the 428 Cobra Jet engine to Super Cobra Jet specification. Factory rated at the same 335 HP as the Cobra Jet, SCJ engines packed a much stronger bottom end, employing a different crankshaft, flywheel and damper, special capscrew 427 Le Mans-type connecting rods and an external oil cooler mounted on the front bulkhead that reduced oil temperature by 30 degrees.
