1974 Volkswagen Thing Type 181

All All 6 hits ID #8260

181 Volkswagen “TheThing” its painted bright red and has been customized for the beach, with TIKI cup holders, TIKI shifter, wood steering wheel, wood floor mats, beads on the seats, a roll bar with a sony stereo and sound bar. The door panels are lined with burlap Hawaiian coffee bag material. The paint is 10 years old but still has a shine, the motor runs good and the transmission shifts smooth. the odometer shows 74,000 miles, we dont know if that correct or not. These were imported into the US for only two years for a total of 25,000 vehicles. The ride quality is surprisingly good, there are shift points on the speedometer like the VW beetles use to have. It's a solid vehicle no rust perforation, the windshield also folds down for beach cruising. The tires have plenty of tread 90%, the top looks new and the plexi glass side windows are in a zipper case in the trunk, one is cracked and one other is broken. The factory dual exhaust exits through the rear bumper.
some facts below about the floor pans and suspension:
The floorpans came from the Type 1 Karmann Ghia, which had a wider floorpan than the Beetle. Rear swing axle suspension with reduction gearing from the discontinued split-screen Volkswagen Transporter was used until 1973, when it was replaced with double-jointed axles used by Porsche and IRS semi-trailing arm setup as used on the 1303 and US-spec Beetles
