Description

During the early 20th century, Ford concentrated on building automobiles for the masses and quickly became the dominate player in the American automobile market. By the mid-1920s, however, other carmakers were quickly catching up. The iconic Model T was showing its age, and Henry Ford reluctantly admitted a replacement was needed. Enter the beloved and innovative Model A Ford. Although a mechanical genius and savvy businessman, Henry Ford lacked the design eye of classic coachbuilders. Recognizing this challenge, Ford wisely left the principle design of the Model A up to his son, Edsel, and his younger contemporaries. The result was obviously a homerun for Ford Motor Company. The new Model A was soon referred to as the “Baby Lincoln” and provided an opportunity for the “average Joe” to afford a beautiful, modern car. The Model A was the first Ford to use what would become the standard set of driver controls: conventional clutch and brake pedals, throttle, and gearshift. The fuel tank was located in the cowl between the engine compartment's firewall and the dash panel. A unique visual fuel gauge monitored the gravitational flow of fuel to the carburetor. It was also the first car to have safety glass in the windshield. At a base price of only $385, the 201ci water-cooled four cylinder Model A sold close to five million units during its four year production run (1928-1931).
